Blenheim car confession goes wrong

-

Four women were parked up chatting in a car when one decided to own up - she had slept with the driver’s boyfriend.

The driver slapped her across the face, and told her to get out of the car, a court has heard.

About 90 minutes later, the women drove to a river reserve near Blenheim when they spotted the woman they had kicked out earlier and two others, parked up in another car.

The three women got out and surrounded the other car, the police summary said.

The woman and two others inside locked the doors.

The women yelled for the woman to get out of the car. They repeatedly hit and kicked the car, and threw various items at it.

Police said they were trying to break into the car to get the victim out.

They smashed the rear window, but the victim inside yelled out the police had been called and the women fled the Simonsen Reserve, known as Malthouse Reserve, by the Opaoa River.

The three women were charged with wilful damage and threatening behaviour, and the driver was also charged with assault.

The owner of the car that was damaged, who was in the car during the attack on July 2, sought $662.40 in reparation.

Two of the women, the 19-yearold driver and her 21-year-old passenger, both of Riverlands, pleaded guilty at the Blenheim District Court on Monday.

They were remanded on bail to August 28 so a pre-sentencing report could be submitted, and their homes assessed for an electronically-monitored sentence.

‘‘I’m not indicating that [home or community detention] is what the sentence will be, but I want the entire range of options available to the sentencing judge,’’ Judge Denys Barry said.

‘‘This has got very nasty undertones.’’

The third defendant, an 18-yearold, did not enter a plea and was remanded on bail to August 14.
