Tight sets mark battles on court

Uso held aff a strong challenge from Dank Lords when the second round of Marlboroug­h Volleyball’s Fairweathe­rs’ Spring League was played at on Thursday at Marlboroug­h Lines Stadium 2000.

Despite a strong start from Dank Lords, Uso took out the first set 25-17. Dank Lords raced to another early lead in the second set, before letting Uso catch and pass them to win 26-24. Uso carried on that momentum in the third, where it was Dank Lords’ turn to pull the lead back, although they fell short at the end as Uso completed a clean sweep with a 25-23 win.

The first set between Treefellas and Defying Gravity was very competitiv­e, before Treefellas put pressure on at the net to claim a 25-23 win. The second set was all Defying Gravity who shot out to a big lead and held on to level the match with a 25-22 win. With both teams a set up, the third was a nailbiter but great serving from Treefellas carried the day for them to win 15-12.

The last premier game of the evening saw Cri Clovers take on Fairweathe­rs. Stand out player was Fairweathe­rs’ Jeff Spurlock for his powerful serving, at one stage allowing his side to win 11 points in a row. Spurlock also dis- played his setting skills, giving team-mate Nigel Sowman the opportunit­y to produce devastatin­g hits. Fairweathe­rs won all three sets 25-21, 25-16 and 25-12.

In B grade, Airbusters played QCC, who got good value through the blocking and serving of Callum Nicholson. Airbusters were unstoppabl­e in the second set as Seb Bacchus and John Billingsle­y produced big hits and ace serving to help their team to a 25-8 win. The third set turned into a battle royal before Airbusters claimed the two-point advantage to win narrowly 25-23.
