Sevens champions crowned

Waimea Old Boys and Motueka High School Gold claimed the men’s and women’s crowns when Tasman’s Wadsco Motorworld Picton Sevens were staged at Endeavour Park on Saturday.

Twelve men’s sides and five women’s combinatio­ns gathered at the seaside venue to enjoy some fast-paced action, with Nelson-based sides dominating the top placings.

Waimea Old Boys fought out a tight men’s final with Marist A, Waimea getting up 26-24, while Motueka High School Gold were runaway winners of the women’s decider, prevailing 33-5 over Marist.

In the men’s grade Marist A won their semifinal 45-7 over Wanderers while Waimea beat Kahurangi 22-10.

The Waimea men’s team comprised Taylor SimpsonBro­wn, Dan Hytongue, Lee McBrydie, Jack Grooby, James lash, Sione Anesi, Erenimo Tau, Cameron Ross, Jason Ickon, Lemeki Cagiala, Connor McBrydie and Jayde Palmer.

Final placings in the men’s grade were: Waimea Old Boys 1, Marist A 2, Kahurangi 3, Wanderers 4, Stoke 5, Nelson 6, Renwick 7, Central 8, Nelson College 9, Country 10, Buller 11 and Marist B 12.

The women’s grade was played as a round robin, with Waimea Old Boys beating Motueka Black for third and fourth position.

Two Marlboroug­h teams attended, Central being a combinatio­n of Moutere, Marlboroug­h Boys’ College and Central club players, while Renwick added some Harlequins players to their mix.

Next up for the region’s top sevens players is the Motueka Sevens on November 11, followed by the Wanderers Invitation­al Sevens the following Saturday. Tasman teams for national tournament­s will be named following those events.
