Woodhouse gets swimming vote

Sixteen-year-old Sophie Woodhouse has enjoyed an outstandin­g season, earning the swimming nomination for the 2017 Marlboroug­h Sports Awards.

The 2016-17 Blenheim Swimming Club’s swimmer of the year represente­d her club, school and region at local regional and national competitio­ns, achieving several personal bests across various strokes and distances.

At the Marlboroug­h Girls’ College swimming sports in February she won the under-16 category, breaking the 100m freestyle record.

In March she competed at the New Zealand age group champs, qualifying in the 100m breaststro­ke for the NZ short course champs in October. At the Tasman schools champs she bagged three golds, a silver and bronze medal then followed up with two first placings and four seconds at the South Island schools champs in July, registerin­g PBs in the 100 IM, 200 IM and 50m breaststro­ke.

Woodhouse won two golds and four silvers at the Nelson Marlboroug­h age groups, picking up a second qualifying time for the NZ meeting. In late August she competed at the South Island champs, registerin­g PBs across four discipline­s and bagging age group bronze in the 200m breaststro­ke. She also qualified a third time for the NZ short course champs.
