Good Samaritan gets broken nose

- JENNIFER EDER

A man fighting with his girlfriend has fractured the nose of a man who intervened.

Christopher Taualupe, 24, was walking through a car park beside Top Town Cinemas, in Blenheim, arguing with his girlfriend, about 1am on February 11.

A man passing by heard Taualupe shouting and saw his girlfriend on the ground crying, a police summary said.

He ran over and asked what was happening, and Taualupe told the man to leave them alone.

He then punched the man two or three times in the face, causing the victim to fall to the ground, the summary said.

Taualupe ran after his girlfriend, leaving the man lying in the gutter.

The man was in hospital for six hours, with concussion and a fractured nose, and a sore and swollen face.

When spoken to by police, Taualupe said he was arguing with his girlfriend as she thought he was cheating on her, a summary said.

‘‘She thought I was cheating because I was dancing with a girl at Club Envy ... We were walking home. A guy chased us down. I told him to leave us alone. He didn’t, so I punched him twice.’’

Taualupe admitted a charge of assault at the Blenheim District Court on Monday.

His lawyer John Holdaway asked that no conviction be entered as he intended to apply for a discharge without conviction.
