Safety first
Weld Pass has been the bane of motorists for decades. While the safety measures proposed by the New Zealand Transport Agency ( Marlborough Express, February 26) are a positive step, they just tinker at the edges.
Rather than merely tarted-up, the portion of highway between Seventeen Valley Stream and Utawai Overpass should be decommissioned and replaced by a new road running close to the path of the main trunk railway.
The railway route would permit gentler curves, a wider carriageway and eliminate the torturous climb and descent. It would immensely improve safety and overall amenity and future-proof for the increase in freight, tourist and local vehicles.
If you think this is a good idea then tell the NZTA via its website or a form from the district council office and lobby local MP Stuart Smith.

Christchurch, February 26 and the cleanup, don’t we? We-all, that’s who.
It seems any form of accountability is just old-fashioned nonsense; not good for society.
Amusing to read that the deluge around Kaiko¯ura was a ‘‘once in 150-year event.’’ The rainfall which led to the destructive flooding in Invercargill was a ‘‘once in 120-year’’ event in the 1980s; we had another, almost equally destructive two years later.

Blenheim, March 2. experience, to see the wealth of family that all these people have brought to Blenheim.
Unless I blinked and missed them though, I didn’t see any of the Ma¯ori people presenting their cultural heritage.
What a shame, I thought, as we have something to be very proud of in their sector.
This is a multicultural part of the world, we all live here and in most cases were born here.
It became so obvious that we are all valuable parts of one culture. We are in such a beautiful place and I wish that we could learn to appreciate everyone that calls this multicultural civilisation home. CRAIG BARLOW
