Redwoodtown also had some postal services.

‘‘This model works well for us, and also for the businesses we work with, who often enjoy increased foot traffic as people come in to buy stamps, and drop off their parcels.

‘‘It’s also good news for our customers, who often enjoy longer opening hours, and more convenient locations,’’ Yagmich said.

‘‘While we carry out this search, we’d like to reassure our customers that there will be no change to our services for customers who use the Blenheim NZ Post and Kiwibank.’’

Yagmich said the company would work alongside Kiwibank to keep staff, customers and the community informed, as dates and changes were confirmed.

It was not yet clear if any staff members would be affected.

Kiwibank was set up in 2002 and operated through New Zealand Post’s post offices, or as standalone businesses.

Kiwibank issued its own statement yesterday, saying the adoption of the ‘‘standalone branch’’ model was part of changes to meet customer needs.

The company wanted to create ‘‘a more specialised banking service, an innovative customer experience and a strong brand presence in Blenheim’’.

Kiwibank general manager retail distribution Geoff Waller said the ‘‘standalone branch’’ model had gained ‘‘great’’ customer feedback since it was introduced in June, 2016.

The foundation stone of Blenheim’s old Post Office building was unearthed during renovations of the old Rangita¯ne House foyer in 2013. It was laid on June 29, 1972.
