Australian team-mates ‘can’t stand’ Warner

-

New Australia coach Justin Langer has opened the door for axed vice-captain David Warner to return to the side but an Australian cricket journalist says half of Australia’s players ‘‘can’t stand him’’.

A Cricket Australia (CA) investigation found that Warner had masterminded the plan with former captain Steve Smith and opener Cameron Bancroft to cheat by tampering with the ball during the third test against South Africa in March.

Warner and Smith were subsequently banned for 12 months – Bancroft for nine months – and they gave tearful public apologies as Darren Lehmann resigned as coach.

Veteran cricket journalist Robert Craddock said potentially welcoming back Warner to the Australian side was the biggest problem Langer faces because the 31-year-old opener’s former Australia team-mates don’t want to play with him again.

‘‘For me his biggest issue is David Warner,’’ Craddock told SEN’S Whateley, an Australian radio show, after Langer indicated that Warner may yet represent Australia again when he was unveiled as their new coach last week.

‘‘Langer wants mateship in the team and I don’t believe mateship and Warner are compatible, because half the players can’t stand him. They contacted Cricket Australia saying they didn’t want to play with him again.’’

Meanwhile, Tim Paine has been named captain for Australia’s one-day international series in England but it appears likely to be a temporary posting, with selectors yet to settle on a permanent skipper.

Paine, who took over as Australia’s test captain after the balltampering saga in South Africa, will lead a 15-man squad for five ODIS in June with Aaron Finch named as vice-captain for the first assignment under new coach Justin Langer.
