Jones clashes with Boks fans

-

England coach Eddie Jones had a verbal exchange with Springboks fans in the tunnel after his team’s 42-39 loss to South Africa at Ellis Park in Johannesburg yesterday.

Jones watched his side crash to a fifth successive defeat and then had to deal with a verbal barrage from the home fans after the final whistle.

According to PA, Boks supporters leaned over the railings but the Australian stood his ground for 10 to 15 seconds and engaged before being ushered away by players and staff.

‘‘They [South Africa fans] have always got plenty to say. Especially when they win,’’ Jones said.

Asked by the interviewer if he had responded, Jones added: ‘‘Of course I did.’’

When asked exactly what he had said, Jones replied: ‘‘That’s not for me to share with you. I’m sure it’s on a mobile phone somewhere in the world.’’

In typical fashion, the England coach laughed off the heckling when quizzed further at the post-match press conference.

‘‘I asked the fan where I can get a good bottle of Pinotage and I’m still waiting for the answer.

‘‘If someone can help me out, please help me out. They told me to go find it myself.

‘‘I wouldn’t worry about that. It was such a great game of rugby and you are worried about one little conversation in the tunnel about a bottle of red wine.’’
