Rose Built Homes in limbo

The owner of a construction company is considering liquidation due to financial difficulties, leaving three half-built houses waiting to be finished.

Rose Built Homes told clients it was struggling, because of a slowing market and regional competition, but was committed to completing three remaining builds in Blenheim.

Blenheim woman Anastasia Brown said the timber frame of her first home at Boulevard Park on Taylor, on the southern edge of Blenheim, had been sitting in the rain for 20 weeks.

‘‘We noticed nothing had happened for a long time, the roof hadn’t gone on ... the skip contractor just dumped everything on the lawn since they weren’t being paid, the scaffolding came down,’’ Brown said.

‘‘We understand, of course, because they are not getting paid but it does leave us wondering what will happen now.’’

The 20-year-old and her partner went straight to Rose Built Homes to build their first home, having heard it was an up-andcoming Blenheim business. It started trading in 2017.

‘‘We knew they built nice homes and we heard they were really nice people,’’ Brown said.

‘‘They called us in for a meeting at the beginning of August.

‘‘They said there were rumours going around and some of them were right and some were wrong. And they were reevaluating about whether they could get some help in and carry on. It looked promising.’’

But she was worried about the condition of the timber frames, exposed in the rain for months.

Brown and her mother decided to arrange and pay for the roofing and scaffolding themselves, while they waited to hear what would happen, Brown said.

‘‘The insurance people told us they will still build the house but it will take some time.’’
