Rodeo treasurer told to repay $21k

-

Pihema was employed at the freezing works in Nelson. She was able to pay $500 in reparation within a week, followed by weekly instalments of $100, Riddell said.

Pihema had been the club’s treasurer since July 2015, according to a police summary of facts.

She admitted four charges of using a document for a pecuniary advantage on February 7.

As treasurer, she had access to the club’s accounts and was a signatory on its chequebook.

Between March 2016 and June 2019, Pihema cashed ‘‘multiple cheques’’ in the name of Tua Marina Rodeo Association Incorporated. The cheques and money in the accounts was the property of the association.

In all instances where the cheques were cashed, Pihema produced her identification and signed her name.

She used the money for her ‘‘own personal gain’’, including paying her landlord and her power bills, the summary said.

When spoken to by police, she said she was facing a ‘‘really tough time’’ and ‘‘felt embarrassed about asking for help’’.

At the sentencing, Judge David Ruth said references about Pihema spoke highly of her and were supportive of her in the future, despite the offending.

Judge Ruth ordered her to pay the full amount in reparation. This would go to Tua Marina School.

He sentenced her to 12 months’ intensive supervision with special conditions that she undertake ‘‘budgeting advice’’ and counselling as directed by her probation officer.

She must also complete 100 hours of community work.
