A sport for all ages

- By NICOLA STEWART

Vintage midgets were on show at the annual Youth and Veterans day at Rangeview Speedway in Waharoa on Sunday.

The Auckland Vintage Speedway club made a special appearance, taking their cars out on to the track for a demonstration.

Club member Mal Parsons brought along his 1938 Jeep engine midget.

‘‘We come down every year to show the midgets and it’s always a good day. We like to prove that these old cars can still go pretty well,’’ said Mr Parsons.

The ministocks, minisprints, saloon cars and jalopys competed in 10-lap races.

Aria Berg, 11, has almost finished her first season of racing a ministock and said she would be back next season. ‘‘I’ve always wanted to race. Sometime I get nervous but once I get out there I just love it. When you get up to speed it feels like you’re flying.’’
