Nom­i­na­tions sought for awards

Sport Waikato is look­ing to ac­knowl­edge 2012 sport­ing ex­cel­lence in the re­gion.

Dis­trict Sports Awards nom­i­na­tions are now open un­til Fri­day, Oc­to­ber 5.

Each Waikato dis­trict will have its own awards event with cat­e­gory win­ners go­ing for­ward to be con­sid­ered for the pres­ti­gious Brian Perry Waikato Re­gional Sports Awards, held on Thurs­day, Jan­uary 31, 2013.

Sport Waikato gen­eral man­ager Mike Maguire said this year’s awards will fol­low on from the un­pre- ce­dented suc­cess New Zealand had at the Lon­don Olympics.

“To be recog­nised in an Olympic year which gar­nered us a record medal vic­tory is a spe­cial oc­ca­sion for any lo­cal sports­man,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s time to show­case our sport­ing stars and also the peo­ple who ded­i­cate their time to mak­ing sport hap­pen in our re­gion.”

Mata­mata-Pi­ako Dis­trict co-or­di­na­tor Ruth Stan­ley en­cour­ages each club, school and sports or­gan­i­sa­tion to take the time to fill in a nom­i­na­tion form.

“We now have on­line nom­i­na­tion forms mak­ing it even eas­ier for peo­ple to get their nom­i­na­tions through, the process is quick and ef­fi­cient,” Mrs Stan­ley said.

Dis­trict Sports Awards events will take place in Taupo, South Waikato, Waikato, Waipa, Mata­mata Pi­ako, Wait­omo, Hau­raki and Otoro­hanga dur­ing Novem­ber.

Nom­i­na­tions can be made on­line at sport­waikato. org. nz or on forms from Mata­mata, Mor­rinsville and Te Aroha coun­cil of­fices.
