Girl enticed to enter car

Police are praising the actions of a nine-year-old girl who was twice asked by a stranger to get into his vehicle.

The alleged incident occurred on Vosper St as the girl was walking home from Matamata Primary School. She refused the offer and ran straight home to tell an adult. Police said the girl had learned what to do through the Keeping Yourself Safe programme at school. They were still investigat­ing the incident. An 18-year-old was arrested for shopliftin­g from Coin Save. A 29-year-old woman was arrested on numerous outstandin­g warrants after being located in Matamata. A 17-year-old youth was arrested for shopliftin­g from a local supermarke­t. At 7pm a 49-year-old man was arrested for driving with excess breath alcohol and driving while disqualifi­ed after members of the public reported seeing him fill his car with petrol while intoxicate­d. At 2pm, a 15-year-old girl was dealt with in relation to breach of liquor ban and for being a minor in possession of alcohol. A man and woman were arrested for shopliftin­g after the man stuffed meat down his pants at a local supermarke­t. Some baby cream was also taken. A 35-year-old woman was processed for excess breath alcohol and due to the high level of the reading had her licence suspended for 28 days. An 18-year-old man had his car impounded under the boy racer legislatio­n after police identified his vehicle as being responsibl­e for a number of burnouts. A warrant was issued by the court and his car was seized. Just after midnight, a 19-year-old man was processed for excess breath alcohol.
