Head students look forward to new roles

- By NICOLA STEWART

Matamata College will have a strong team of leaders next year with a new head boy and girl ready to step up to the mark.

Joseph Freeman was announced as head boy and Jessica Schweizer as head girl at the senior prizegiving on Thursday.

They will be following departing head boy Ciaran O’Malley and head girl Riannan Bardoul.

The deputies for 2013 will be Janae Gaskell and David Exton.

Principal Glenn Rowsell said the four students had strong support from staff and students.

‘‘They are all fine young people who are heavily involved in the school,’’ he said.

‘‘They’ll work very well together and they will all bring something different to the team.’’

Jessica is a talented musician and earlier this year toured China with the New Zealand Youth Brass Band.

‘‘ I would like to implement more culture into the school to give students more opportunities in the music and cultural departments,’’ said Jessica.

She was planning to start a concert band at the school.

Joseph was looking forward to acting as a role model for the younger students and helping Year 9 students make the transition from intermediate.

‘‘It will be great to influence students and show them that you don’t have to be the best of the best to achieve at school.

‘‘ If you can set good examples for them, then they will hopefully carry that on into the future,’’ he said.

All four said they were surprised, happy and relieved to find out they had been selected.
