Get the scent of fresh pine, with a Rotary Christmas tree

- By DAVID HULME

Are you looking to purchase a top quality Christmas tree with the added benefit of supporting charity?

Well the Rotary Club of Matamata is once again selling Christmas trees in December from various distribution points to raise money for its charitable endeavours.

Rotary Club of Matamata director Stew Wadey said the Christmas tree selling project was an important way the club could raise money while also providing a service to the people of Matamata.

‘‘The trees we sell are all professionally grown and trimmed to allow us to provide a high quality product,’’ Mr Wadey said.

‘‘This project is an important cog in the club’s fundraising efforts for the year and we hope to be able to raise enough to support several international and local projects from the sale of the trees.’’

Mr Wadey said the club was a strong supporter of two key Rotary International projects – Shelter Boxes and Emergency Response Kits which are sent out any time a disaster hits a nation. It is hoped that some of the money raised this year would go towards these projects.

‘‘ These are two key projects which benefit people that have lost everything through natural disaster and have absolutely nothing left,’’ Mr Wadey said. ‘‘Our club has been a long-time supporter of these international response efforts and it is gratifying to know money raised locally can support people in their darkest hour.’’

Mr Wadey said money from the sale of trees would also be used closer to home, with the club having been involved in supplying dictionaries into local schools for a number of years to aid the education of pupils in Matamata.

The Christmas trees will be available on Saturday December 14 at the annual Christmas market and at the New World car park. They will also be sold at New World on Saturday December 7 from 9am to 2pm plus a presence at the Christmas Parade and Monday December 16 purchased from Pippins, Four Seasons Garden Centre or Kaimai Garden Centre during the week.

Trees cost $35 for 6ft and $45 for 7ft.
