Fast beginning makes light work of Pirongia

McPherson Contractors Hinuera 36 Pirongia 15

Ross break for Matt Ring to spring away to score, 5-nil to Hinuera. Playing into the wind meant conversions were a rarity.

Hinuera’s tactics were direct and straight running with Noa Mananawa, Khan Underwood and Zane Herrick terrorising their opponents.

Even prop Daniel McGillivray cranked up his energy levels to put in a burst or two. Throw in Mr Energiser Jason Brady and the freakish skills of Fergus King and Pirongia had a hard row to hoe.

to score following a charge down, Hinuera 10-nil in the 12th minute.

Pirongia were a competitive unit, hammering at Hinuera’s line in a series of pick and goes resulting in a determined try, Hinuera 10-5.

The gold and blacks third try was initiated by a quick throw in by Ring, Herrick made good ground, Underwood (a prop!) throws in a side step to put Toby O’Reilly under the bar. Converted 17-5 to Hinuera.

Mananawa completed Hinuera’s scoring 22-5 until O’Reilly had a 22 metre drop out charged down.

Pirongia scored to close out the half 22-10.

Hinuera, with the wind, scored within seconds of the re-start from a King burst and offload to Underwood.

O’Reilly converted, Hinuera 29-10. Pirongia replied with their third try, Hinuera 29-15. Fergus King was player of the day for charging down a conversion attempt, setting up a try, scoring one himself and generally being nuisance to Pirongia.

Next week home to Southern. Blazer games played by Noa, Khan and Ryan Wilson.
