Gun club firmly in his sights

-

Matamata man Stephen Penhey won’t let being paraplegic stop him from enjoying his firearms.

He now hopes other residents will show interest in starting a local small bore gun club.

Penhey said the idea of starting a club has selfish reasons, as he still enjoyed shooting targets and hadn’t been able to hunt since becoming wheelchair bound.

His dream would be to compete in target shooting competitions.

He said the club would have other benefits for people of all ages and genders.

‘‘A lot of dads want their sons, and their daughters too, to learn to shoot but don’t necessarily have the time to take them hunting,’’ he said.

The club would help people gain the skills and discipline to gain their firearms licence.

He had learnt to shoot at a small bore club in Feilding as a child and that had fired his interest in hunting.

He said the club would have social benefits.

Penhey had club could use.

He said he talked to an employee of the Matamata Piako District Council, James Ross, who had said if Penhey could get 10 or more people interested in starting a local club where they could shoot slug guns and 22s, then he would help them find appropriate land.

Anyone can register their interest in starting a Matamata small bore club by phoning Stephen Penhey on 07 888 9369.
