Young men organise manly fun

- ABBY BROWN

A group of young men, and women, reckon they know what other young people would think isn’t ‘‘lame’’.

The group of ten youth, supported by Starfish and the local police, has organised the Domaininator. ‘‘It was about giving our age group something to do that they don’t think is lame and making something that they will rock up to and have a good time and doesn’t involve alcohol,’’ one of the organisers, Jared McNaughton said. Some of the organisers, including McNaughton and Levi Henare, said their mates had keenly signed up for it already.

At the February 20 event, fittingly held at the Matamata Domain, eight teams of five per grade will face off against each other in various sports, such as touch, and will crawl under a net, jump over walls and jump along in sacks as part of an obstacle course.

Competitors would be trying to get the edge over each other to win the cash prizes up for grabs for the winners of each sections.

There would be a junior section for those aged 14-years-old and younger and a seniors for 15 to 19-year-olds. One of the organisers, Jacob Marsh-Bentley, was encouraging local businesses to enter teams in the masters’ section, which is for people 20 and older. ‘‘It’s about giving back to the community by getting all age groups involved in the events,’’ he said. The organisers hoped the event would inspire businesses to have a bit of social fun with their workmates. Teams could also bond by coming up with themed costumes with spot prizes on the table for that too.

Happily tired teams would then be able to relax with a movie being shown in the park.

Young children involved in the local anti-bullying scheme, Look Up, Look Forward, would also be running a gala earlier in the day.

The day was funded by the Ministry of Youth Development and the Matamata-Piako District Council.

The Domaininator starts at 2pm and runs to 10.30pm on February 20. Register a team of five by emailing jordyn@starfishservices.co.nz or texting 027 777 7253 Plenty, who won the elected to bat.

The Stormers knew they had to get the opening batsman out early, particularly Toby Taylor who the day before had scored 50 runs off 17 balls.

Grant Vollebregt was the man for the job and bowled Toby for only eight runs.

The Stormers aimed to bat the entire 30 overs. and although they managed that, a middle and tail order collapse saw Piako finish 136 runs with the fall of 9 wickets.

Day three and four proved much the same with gruelling matches against the unbeaten Manawatu, Eastern Suburbs from Wellington and Onslow.

The Piako Team was coached by Peter Kane, Steve Anderson and Colin Henderson.
