Players represent Waikato

- MURRAY HAWKINGS

Four Matamata College 1st 1X hockey players have been selected to represent Waikato.

Reuben Jones, Courtney Hawkings, Lauren Hawkings and George Greenhill are four of seven current or past Matamata students representing the Waikato region for U18 and U15 hockey honours.

Matamata sisters Courtney and Lauren with Madison Tims are heading to Timaru on July 10 playing for the U18 girls, George will travel to Invercargill with the U18 boys with Troy Allen being a non travelling reserve and Reuben Jones and Lane Tims will play for the U15 boys in Levin.

All these players apart from George came through Matamata junior and intermediate teams with Courtney, Lauren, George and Reuben playing for Matamata College 1st X1 teams.

Madison and Lane attend and play for St Pauls in Hamilton and former student Troy plays for UMS men’s team along with George and Reuben on Sundays.

It’s great to see players from our small town achieving Waikato honours considering the large Waikato area and the play.

All have put in lots of extra training on skills and fitness over the last few years to get this far, either by locally run or Hamilton based academies or private lessons and they all share passion and determination to succeed.

With the college supplying a full turf to practice and home games, young players can aspire to get to Waikato Rep level and beyond if they are willing to put the effort in.

At U13 level we currently have six players through to the last trial at the end of July. Well done and good luck to them. large numbers who
