Jessop picks up top awards
Hamilton designer Noel Jessop, of Noel Jessop Architecture, has cleaned up at the Waikato Regional ADNZ Architectural Design Awards.
Jessop received four awards for three projects: Ember Restaurant, a residential new home called Black on White, and bach in the Coromandel.
He won the Commercial/ industrial Architectural Design Award, Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award and a Residential New Home Over 300 square metres Architectural Design Award and a Highly Commended.
Judge Duncan Joiner said Jessop’s work was beautifully presented.
‘‘I think that even though they’re across quite a diverse range of building types, there’s a consistent approach to designing which I think is very admirable and very disciplined.
‘‘Overall, there is a sort of formalism of the three projects, which is why I would say they are both attractive, compelling, very smart buildings.’’
He said Jessop paid a lot of attention to fine detail, and showed a good relationship bewteen the buildings and their environments.
The designs were picked by three judges: Joiner, Michael Davis and Graeme Boucher.
The judges said Jessop’s Black on White presents a set of concerns to do with light and shade, solid and void, and that these are followed through into the material selection, including recycled brick and blackened timber.
‘‘This is a relentless pursuit of a set of ideas. There are variations on this theme which play out in the differing spaces branching from the spine of the gallery,’’ said the judges.
The winning designs were announced on Friday night at a ceremony in Rotorua, with more than 149 entries.
The awards recognise creative and well-designed residential, commercial, alterations and multi-use projects from across New Zealand.
Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ) is a professional body for architects and architectural designers in New Zealand.
The national awards will be held on Friday, October 28.
