Brewery buys Pink Church

- KELSEY WILKIE

Good George Brewery is expanding its empire, taking over the Iconic Pink Church in Cambridge.

The Pink Church on Cambridge’s Victoria St is a popular attraction but whether the new owners want to keep it the bring colour is uncertain.

Gordon and Barbara Campbell purchased the building in 1985 and painted it the colour it is today.

It had operated as a cafe´ and gift store but was put up for sale in November last year.

Good George chief executive Race Louden has confirmed the company has bought the building and will transform it into a bar and restaurant.

Louden said hinted at a return to a former colour scheme.

‘‘We’ll do our homework and listen to people but it didn’t start its life the colour pink, did it?

‘‘Although, we’ve been joking it’s the same colour as our Doris cider, so maybe that’s a sign too.’’

Louden said that the Historic Places Trust had been consulted during the process and their input on colour and design would be taken into account.

Architectural drawings are underway and work on the renovations will begin in August. It is expected to take about five months to complete.

‘‘It’s a great old building with a loads of character but parts of it have definitely seen better days.

‘‘There is a fair amount of internal structural support work to do before we can think about pouring any beer in there.’’

Louden would not say how much the renovations would cost but estimated the works would cost up to 50 per cent more than they originally hoped.

Good George Brewery began in the site formerly known as St George’s Anglican Church in 2012. It’s popularity has grown and the business has quickly expanded its bottled and tap product..

Louden said they first looked at the Pink Church after several Facebook messages from Cambridge locals urging them to bring a bar there.

The Cambridge move signalled the brewery’s future intentions were to look after the local market first, turning down several export opportunities in the last 12 months.
