Fast, polite staff at New World

- REXINE HAWES

If it’s friendly, fast and helpful service you are looking for, then you will find it at Matamata New World, and the staff have the accreditation to prove it.

Matamata New World check out operators Amy Dean, 16, and Danielle Hoyle, 17, competed in the Foodstuffs Checker of the Year competition last week, placing them in the top five of more than 120 competitors from within the Waikato.

Danielle placed second awarding her with a sash and $150 New World voucher, with Amy coming in fifth place, receiving a certificate and $50 New World voucher. They were among a team of nine sent from the Matamata store.

Awards only go out to the top 12 participants.

Matamata New World have entered the competition in previous years.

Competitors from Waikato New World and Pak ‘n’ Save stores tested their skill against each other at the Clarence Street Theatre in Hamilton, where they were judged by eight senior Foodstuff staff on speed, presentation, customer service and accuracy as they scanned 30 items as fast as possible, while staying friendly and composed.

Both Amy and Danielle, admit they were feeling sick with nerves prior to the competition but are now feeling very proud of their achievement.

Danielle has been working at New World for six months and says she is glad she went along and tried something new.

‘‘I liked the challenge, it was something new and different.’’

Amy, a first time entrant into the competition, has been with with New World for three years and says nerves had always held her back from getting involved with the competition, but she decided this year she wanted to experience the competition for herself, with excellent results.

New World Matamata Owner Matthew Hart said his team of nine operators all performed well, as being on stage performing in front of 350 people is difficult.

‘‘Historically we stop at Burger King on our way home as a celebratory treat, I do happen to know that this was the attraction for Dani entering the competition. We are all very proud of Dani, Amy and our team,’’ he says.
