Knitters support charity

- REXINE HAWES

A group of ladies at Country Lodge Rest Home have been busy this year on a special project to raise funds for charity.

The Knatty Knitters and Friends group have spent the last nine months knitting over 200 lapel daffodils to help raise funds for Daffodil Day, the major fundraiser for the Cancer Society.

Group member Anne Stokes, who is a former Matamata Daffodil Day co-ordinator, says all the daffodils have been lovingly crafted by members of the group who are all very passionate about the work of the society.

The group started five years ago with six ladies and now has 25 knatty-knitters, who all have different knitting talents. Not all the ladies take part in knitting the daffodils, but Stokes says they are all equally supportive of the annual charity.

The daffodils are $5 each and are available to buy from Strider Footwear and Accessories on Arawa Street, Pohlen Hospital on Rawhiti Ave and Matamata Country Lodge on Elizabeth Street.

Strider owner/operator Patsy Morey, a keen supporter of Daffodil Day, says this is the second year they have sold the knitted daffodils and last year they were a very successful fundraiser.

All proceeds from the sale of the knitted daffodils will go towards the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society and sup- - Daffodil Day is Friday August 26 - It is the annual flagship event and major fundraiser for the Cancer Society - Fabric daffodils are available to purchase from Strider Footwear and Accessories, Country Lodge Rest Home and Pohlen Hospital

Local Daffodil Day coordinator Trish Brown says the knitted works from Anne and her team is very valuable to the society. Their knitted daffodils ‘really do stand out’.

‘‘It’s great to see people in the community taking it upon themselves to come up with innovative ways to support Daffodil Day and the work of the Cancer Society. I hope to see everyone in Matamata with a stunning yellow daffodil on their shirts by the end of Daffodil Day.’’

Brown is still seeking volunteers for various jobs, she says it’s not too late to get involved, you can ring her on 027 211 2641.

Daffodil Day, Friday, August 26, is the Cancer Society’s annual flagship event and one of the most important fundraising and awareness campaigns in the country.
