Looking forward to the future

- REXINE HAWES

A woman who is passionate about sports and the rural industry hopes she’ll have a chance to put the experience to use when she contests the local government elections.

Adrienne Wilcock is an avid sportsperson, a dairying and rural recycling advocate and is now a candidate in the Matamata Ward for the Matamata-Piako District Council.

She is the current chair of the AgRecovery Foundation, a rural recycling programme and was appointed by DairyNZ as a trustee in 2013, and became chair April last year.

It’s work she’s passionate about and plans to continue if she is successful in her campaign as councillor.

The role also means she has experience in governance, and has attended many council meetings. However she admits, sitting in those meetings also satisfied her curious personality.

Wilcock has a strong background in a broad range of sports. She and her husband Warwick are life members of the Walton tennis club. Wilcock served on the Matamata netball committee for 10 years, most saturdays you will now find her umpiring. She has a good understanding of the challenges sport clubs face.

However these two interests aside, Wilcock isn’t coming in with an agenda to speak for dairying or sport. They are just two areas in life she cares deeply about and is hopeful to use the experiences to better serve her community.

Community is her real passion and being part of a team that will make decisions benefiting the future of the Matamata-Piako district.

‘‘It’s just about looking forward to the future. Im interested in all facets. The decisions we make today, aren’t just about tomorrow, they are about future generations.

‘‘It’s quite exciting if you can be part of what a community can look like, what you can be involved in. I want the best for our community, to serve our residents well into the future.’’

She acknowledged three longserving Matamata ward councillors are standing down.

She was happy to see Mayor Jan Barnes re-elcted unopposed so her leadership experience can be passed along.
