Wizard of Oz with a twist

- REXINE HAWES

St Josephs Catholic School is hosting a school production with a wee twist on an old favourite.

Over the Rainbow, written and directed by Jemma Van Eijk is a play on The Wizard of Oz.

The story is based around Clara who is is trying to discover her values. The people and characters she meets sets her on a journey of self discovery.

This is Van Eijk’s third production for the school.

The production is a musical, and Van Eijk says each song has a message, adds colour and a lot of fun.

‘‘It’s such a cool thing to do. I love working with the kids and I’ve always loved the arts, doing something like this and seeing the end product is so neat. Kids will look back and think ‘I was part of that’.’’

All 24 of the school’s students are involved, with principal Yvonne Marshall also acting on stage.

Van Eijk says it is neat to see and work with five year olds in the cast, it is their first production.

‘‘We are coming to the end of rehearsals and they are getting very excited.‘‘

The production, on September 13 and 14 starting at 7pm, is open to the public, door sales are available and those who don’t want to miss out can get in early by purchasing a ticket from the office.

Tickets are $10 for adults or $5 for primary/intermediate students.

‘‘Doing something like this and seeing the end product is so neat. Kids will look back and think ’I was part of that’.’’
