Hinuera’s fine start at interclub

- BOWLS

‘‘ The winning team with four wins was a local team comprising of Gerard Slattery, Paul Casey Snr, John Settle and Adrian De Haas.’’

The Hinuera flag has being flying high over the past two weeks.

Waikato Interclub started on October 15 and the Hinuera Premier A Men’s team won five out of six games.

They had a clean sweep of Tokoroa and dropped a game against Putaruru to lead the overall competition by six points.

The Premier B Men’s team won 7 out of 9 games. They dropped a game against Stadium and Frankton Junction, but ended with a clean sweep against Te Awamutu. They sit in second spot with 21 points only 4 points behind Rewa.

Unfortunately the Premier A Ladies team had a bye in the first round and the second round was not finished due to rain.

The second and third days of the Waikato Interclub is scheduled for October 19 and 30.

The Hinuera Club held an Open Mens Fours tournament last Thursday. The tournament sponsored by Super Liquor had 12 teams competing for prizes. The winning team with four wins was a local team comprising of Gerard Slattery, Paul Casey Snr, John Settle and Adrian De Haas. Runners up were another local team Bruce Milne, Kevin Smith, Graeme Morgan & Bill Corbett.

On Labour Weekend, Hinuera had four entries in the first Waikato Championship of the season, the Mixed 2x4x2 Pairs. After qualifying on Saturday there were two Hinuera teams remain- ing with post section play taking them to their home green.

Bruce Milne and Bev Corbett won their first against Shirley Lynch and Mike Wade (Frankton Junction) but were knocked out by the Raglan combination of Ross Turner and Eileen Stephens in the quarter finals. Defending Champions Kevin Smith and Debbie White won their first game against Trevor and Rose Harris (Hillcrest) but lost their semi final encounter against the Tokoroa combination of Nev Risbridge and Carol Cox.

The Final was between Risbridge/Cox and the composite pair of NZ under 18 Player of the Year Ashleigh Jeffcoat and NZ Development Team Member Jesse Russell. The Tokoroa pair scored a 4 on the very last end to take the win by 1 shot.

Hinuera Member Chen Naude won Matamata College’s Most Persevering Sportman award recently. Chen joined the Club a couple of seasons ago and has improved his game markedly over the 12 months.
