Touching hearts with cookies

Inner Wheel Matamata’s Christmas Cookie Cheer project has become an annual favourite for club members.

Instigated four years ago by then member Jackie Gieschen, the project involves club members baking a wide variety of cookies, and then delivering them to those in town for whom Christmas may be less than festive.

Earlier this month, club members delivered almost 100 bags of cookies round town, certainly fulfilling this year’s IW internatio­nal theme, Touch a Heart.

Community service plays a major role in Inner Wheel and, in August, members honed their sorting, retailing and rag-cutting skills when they turned out to assist Victim Support raise muchneeded funds in Matamata’s Op Shop.

Funds raised through sizzling sausages at the monthly Matamata Market supported Matamata St John and school camp fees for intermedia­te-age youngsters.

Members also cooked and baked for the army of tradies and supporters involved in November’s building project to provide a bedroom for Tamzyn Twidle.
