Summer heat puts pressure on college team

- ANTHONY SEWELL

It was another tough day at the office for the Matamata College 1st XI.

After losing the toss the boys were asked to bowl first by Waikare in sweltering conditions.

They toiled hard and made early inroads with Tom Conner taking two key wickets at the top of the innings.

Unfortunately luck wasn’t on the college team’s side as some tough chances were missed.

Waikare pounced on these chances and collated a very daunting 237 runs in their 40 overs.

In response Matamata got off to a hot start, batting above the required run rate but unfortunately wickets fell regularly.

With Kieran Holdsworth and Bradley Rumble at the crease the college team saw hope but after Rumble and then Holdsworth fell, the mountain was too tough to climb with Matamata College eventually dismissed for 124.

Next week Matamata College plays against Otorohanga at home.

Tom Conner 2 for 56 off 8 overs; Anthony Sewell 2 for 12 off 3 overs.

Kieran Holdsworth 26 runs off 28 balls; Anthony Sewell 25 runs off 23 balls.
