Hinuera club claim more titles

- BOWLS

It has been a fantastic week for the Hinuera Bowling Club.

The triples team of Bev Corbett, Debbie White and Jocelyn Holten won the National Club Championship Triples in Dunedin. The team qualified for the national event by winning the Waikato Open Triples.

Having secured top spot in section play, the girls faced Burnside (Canterbury) in the quarter final and accounted for them 14-11. In the semi final they met Kohimarama (Auckland) and secured a final berth by winning comfortably 19-8. In the final they played Terrace End (Palmerston North) and after scoring a 3 on the first end the team were always in command and ran out easy winners 21-4. The win gave Bev Corbett her 10th National Title and a silver bar.

Lynda Bennett then joined the three to play the fours. The team qualified second in their section and in the quarter final they beat St.Heliers (Auckland) 14-5. They met Tauranga South, and Hinuera members in Margaret Reed and Jenny Welch, in the semi final but were outplayed to go down 1-10.

Hinuera had a men’s team in the National Club Championship Fours in Stu Settle, Bruce Milne, Gerard Slattery and Kevin Smith. They qualified top spot in their section and faced Belfast in the quarter final. The Hinuera team was in control but the Belfast skip played a fortuitous bowl to win the 3rd last end which turned the game. Belfast went onto take the game 16-12.

At the New Zealand Open, Lynda Bennett won the Open Disabled Triples with her composite team of Bruce Wakefield (Christchurch) and Norm Earnshaw (Papatoetoe). They won the last 7 ends to win 23-7.

Last weekend the Champion of Champion Junior Pairs were held at Raglan where Sam Brill and Chen Naude lost their only game while Jocelyn Holten and Eddie Hodgkinson played at Te Kuiti. Jocelyn and Eddie made it through to the final and played a Te Awamutu. Unfortunately the ladies lost the final.

At the club on the weekend the Mixed Pairs Championship was played. In the final, Stu Settle and Bev Corbett had an earlier lead, then a comeback from Linda Jefferies and Paul Casey Jnr took the score to 12-12 with 1 end to play. Linda and Paul held 3 shots with Stu having the last bowl to take the victory.

The club’s last Open Tournament (Optional Triples) is on Thursday, March 30, sponsored by Joanne Prevett Travel and Broadway Funeral Home.
