Help for rural communities

- REXINE HAWES

Moore said being so close to winter, frosts are an issue, as is grass re-growth.

He said where water covered 80 per cent of farms, it could take six months to a year for grass to re-grow.

He said while older and more experienced farmers have faced floods and recovered, it’s not the same for everyone.

‘‘People have faced floods in the past and they just deal with it.

‘‘They are cool, calm and collected, they have seen it all before.’’

He said two cyclones back to back is much worse than a ‘normal event’ and the financial pres- sure could be burdensome.

‘‘The financial pressure over the last three years and the spring we had in 2016-17 season will have impact on some farmers personal well being.

‘‘Rural Support Trust has been getting phone calls, farmers do know the help is there. If people aren’t ringing for help, they need to. They have to accept help, not try to do it themselves.

‘‘We are a staunch community, we do need to say, I can’t do it all myself.’’
