Setting pace in mini motocross

- REXINE HAWES

Hazel Lang is just as comfortable on two wheels as she is her own feet.

The six-year-old has continued to make her mark in mini motocross champs. Hazel has been riding motocross for just over a year.

As of November, after only eight months of competitive racing, she placed second in New Zealand for 4-5 years at the New Zealand mini motocross champs in Pukekohe.

Since then, she has continued the trend and in a new age group. Hazel is leading the six-round summer series of Pukekohe Motorcycle Club age 4-8 years, which concludes early next month.

She placed first in each of the Minis Under Lights 2017, for 4-5 years, 50cc trail class Tokoroa, King of the Mountain 2017, 4-5 years, 50cc trail class, New Plymouth, Tauranga Motorcycle Club Champs 4-8 years, 50cc trail class Summer Series and King of the North 2017 6-8 years, 50cc trail class Wainui.

She also placed third in the Auckland Champs in Pukekohe 2016, 4-8 years, 50cc trail class and second for the Summercross 2016, 4-5 years, 50cc trail class.

It doesn’t end there for Hazel, she placed third in the Rotorua Interschool Challenge for Matamata Primary School, which included her sister Penny, Dalton Hunt and Jackson Norris. The school placed seventh overall, of 48 schools.

More championships are to come, with the Taupo Motorcycle Club’s winter series.

Motocross is a passion for Hazel, and one she shares with older sister Penny, and younger brother Percy.

Penny had a set back breaking her foot last year.

Despite this, she placed second in the King of the North 2017 7-11yrs, trail class, first in the Tauranga Motorcycle Club Champs Summer Series 16/17, 7-11yrs, and is sitting in second in the Pukekohe Summer Series 7-11yrs, trail class.

‘‘We are really proud of Penny after since returning from her injury,’’ said mum Melissa Lang.

‘‘She has got used to the challenge of her new class and new bike competing against a wider age gap.’’

Four-year old Percy is the proud owner of his first PW50 mini bike. He is preparing to compete in his first motocross event this weekend in the Taupo Club Winter Series.
