Matamata secures Wilson Trophy

COMAG Matamata College 1st XV defeated St Paul’s 21 to 7 on Thursday evening to remain second on the table.

The win secured the Wilson Trophy which has been played for between Matamata and St Paul’s since 1981.

Matamata had to work hard for all of their points as St Paul’s defended well. Try scorers were Caine Hohepa, Joel Waru and Matt Jeffcoat.

All three tries were converted by Kieran Holdsworth.

Next Saturday sees the last game of the first round and Matamata take on HBHS in a top of the table clash with the Tricolor Trophy also up for grabs.

Kickoff is at 11am at Matamata College.

The 2nd XV had a comfortabl­e win against Morrinsvil­le 2nd XV 48 points to 0. Try scorers were Conner Stoner (2), Max Langdon, Jordan Ruck, Nick Allen, Reon McMoses and Aiden Ransley. George Samuels and Riley Pratt both converted two tries each.

The Under 15s beat HBHS 34 to 7. Try scorers were Cooper Wellington (2), Brodie Hodge, Brad Rumble, Kadaphi King and Ezrah Lawson. Matt O’Brien and Jake Smythe kicked a conversion each.

The Under 14s travelled to Te Kuiti and came away with a win by 33 points to 19. Try scorers were Levi Webber (2), Kiowa Dilloway, Liam Williams and Ethan Gibbs. Haimoana Davis converted four of the tries. The girls team lost to Tokoroa, but the Matamata team never gave up. Renee Withers, Montanah Graham, Chelsea Burdan and Kate Smitstra all had good games.
