Interesting projects for knitters

- REXINE HAWES

A group of knitters at Country Lodge have been busy in the past week, putting their hands to good use for Daffodil Day.

Knitted lapel daffodils and cupcake pin cushions are available for purchase at Strider Footware on Broadway and Pohlen Hospital, with all the funds going towards the work of the Cancer Society in the community.

But the projects that come from the Knatty Knitters aren’t limited to daffodils and pin cushions.

They also knit bed socks, beanies, and finger gloves - just to name a few items.

They are all sold at the front desk of Matamata Country Lodge, from which the funds are used for knitting supplies.

They also make knee blankets, some of which are donated to the hospital ward of Country Lodge.

One of the group’s coordinators Ann Stokes says it keeps the residents busy, socialised and their fingers nimble.

‘‘We get to know each other too.’’

And for the non-knitters, there is always a job to do un-rolling wool or sorting through buttons. She said no one gets left out. ‘‘There’s always something to do,’’ she laughed.

From time to time Stokes says they have had primary aged students from some of the schools in the area come and join the ladies, who team the youngsters how to knit.

‘‘It’s great for the kids, some who might not have grandparents, and the ladies enjoy it too,’’ she said.

The group would be hugely appreciative of any wool donations, which can be left at the Country Lodge office.
