Recently the Matamata-Piako District Council held a workshop to discuss options for the replacement of the Matamata Cemetery front boundary fence. Reporter Rexine Hawes brought the matter to public attention recently, after interviewing former Matamata councillor Bob McGrail, who said the post and wire fence was ‘‘disrespectful’’ to those laid to rest. The council, after considering the options with staff and councillors, said it had decided to remove the remaining wall along the front and establish a hedge there. The estimated cost of this option was $6582. The council selected this option over two others, including replacing the damaged wall with another wall, a cost of $13,000. The cost to just replace the section of wall that was damaged with a hedge was $2690. The decision to establish a hedge along the front will also provide a further options to plant the hedge further to the west of the current boundary, where it might extend in the future. The hedge would be similar to the one on the southern boundary, a camelia hedge.
