Making time for community events is something National MP for Waikato Tim van de Molen likes to prioritise.

But his latest endeavour has him as more than just a spectator or guest speaker.

The MP will be getting in among people on Friday, March 2, when he participates in his first Tower Run.

‘‘I grew up in Matamata, but for some reason I never competed in the Tower Run.

‘‘I have attended one - been at the finish a few times and run the course a number of times.’’

Van de Molen said the Tower Run is the beginning of a new fitness regime, something he has very little time for now in his new role.

‘‘There’s a lot of time in the office and I wanted to get that balance right, making time for exercise.

‘‘I really want to connect with the community, and this gives me a chance to do that, even if it means working up a sweat,’’ he said.

He is entering into the 6.6km run but said his fitness level is currently ‘‘woeful’’ and is trying to set time aside for training.

It has been five years since the politician has run to the tower - just for fun.

‘‘I am here there and everywhere - so I will fit it in where I can.

‘‘I am basically travelling with

my running shoes and some gear - it’s a standard part of my kit - unfortunately it doesn’t always come out of the suitcase,’’ van de Molen said.

He admitted he is feeling nervous, especially considering the competition. He wasn’t aiming for a title.

‘‘There are a lot of very fit runners in Matamata.

She said the prizes always come from the town’s supportive business community.

‘‘It never ceases to warm my heart that businesses – no doubt approached for sponsorship several times every week – continue to back the Tower Run year after year,’’ she said.
