What I’m Drinking
AN OLD-FASHIONED OLD FASHIONED
I’ve been making a lot more cocktails recently, rediscovering the fun of mixology and creativity with ingredients. It’s thought that the Old Fashioned cocktail was invented by James E. Pepper in Louisville, Kentucky. When he launched the drink at the Waldorf Astoria hotel bar in New York circa 1880 it became famous. Built in the glass, the recipe requires a teaspoon of sugar dissolved in water to which a dash of Angostura bitters is added, then two parts bourbon. Stir the ingredients while filling the glass with cubed ice and finishing with a twist of orange – we top with soda water or a fine sparkling NZ water.
