Now is the perfect time to step back and rethink your hairstyle and colour.

If you’ve recently asked Google, ‘How do I cut my own hair at home?’ you’re not alone. Under lockdown, hair-related internet searches have skyrocketed right around the globe. And while it can be tempting to pick up a pair of scissors and give your tresses a bit of a trim, the experts are asking us to press ‘pause’ on those thoughts and spend some time thinking about how our hair makes us feel. Michael Beel, three-time winner of New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year and creative director of Buoy Salon & Spa says rather than taking up a DIY approach to hair, now is the time to look at your hair in a different light. “It’s a time to think about what’s important and how do I want to come out of this feeling and looking,” Beel says. He predicts once restrictions are lifted and we’re able to go to the salon, we’ll start to see hair transformations. “People will have had time to think about what’s important to them and how they want to be perceived.” Beel believes many of us will fall into one of two camps hair wise: “They’ll either go super natural and say [colour and style] is not important, or they’ll go, ‘I’m tired of super natural, I want something more high maintenance’.”
