‘SWEET’ NICOLA EDWARDS, AUCKLAND
In February, 2020, I took the trip of a lifetime to Antarctica. The continent is a dream destination for lovers of wildlife and photography. Visiting this harsh and beautiful place challenged me to extend my amateur photography skills to capture the full beauty of the environment. This photo was taken on the small island of Cuverville, on the Antarctic Peninsula. I stepped ashore to be greeted by a welcoming party of adorable and photogenic gentoo penguins, waddling around with their flippers out for balance. As I wandered around the island, this mother and chick caught my eye because it was such a tender and sweet moment amid the chaos of a very active, noisy colony.
