A mural honouring the life of George Floyd, the 46-year-old American who died while being pinned to the ground during a police arrest has been created at the site of his death. Painted by local artists Cadex Herrera, Greta McLain and Xena Goldman, the mural was intended to “portray Floyd in a positive light”. Behind Floyd’s head are the names of some of the other black Americans who have died in police custody. Since its completion, at the corner of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue South, large crowds have gathered to protest Floyd’s death, leave flowers and signs, and to congregate in commemoration. Included among them was Floyd’s brother, Terrence, who prayed and spoke with protesters.

Floyd’s death sparked extensive demonstrations, some of which turned violent, in dozens of American cities including Washington DC, New York and LA, as civilians unhappy at what they saw as a lack of justice for not only Floyd but black people in general made their voices heard. Daylight protests have been overwhelmingly peaceful but have often turned violent later at night as some took the opportunity to loot stores and destroy property. Since Floyd’s death, commemorative murals have sprung up all over the US, and across the world in locations including Milan, Dublin, Berlin and Syria (see below). Many depict the words ‘Please, I can’t breathe’, words said to have been uttered by Floyd before he died.
