Aimed at European vehicles

Although New Zealand was originally dominated by the British car market, given its strong connection with the “Mother Country” back in the old days, the accent switched to Japan with the dropping of duties on imported cars, and the free market approach taken by the New Zealand Government since the 1980s.

Most imports, both new and used, have come from Asia since then, although the strong connection with Australian manufactur­ers has continued, while European imports have tended to be mainly from those companies which had already establishe­d a strong foothold in the NZ market pre 1080, as well as premium European brands.

However, for many other brands, such as Volkswagen, Skoda, Peugeot, Renault, Volvo, it has been a long slog to establish themselves in this extremely competitiv­e new car market.

However, used European cars in particular have continued to flow
