ZF makes a million Intarders

-

The ZF-Intarder wear-free brake system for commercial vehicles is celebrating a special anniversary, with one million units produced. The ZFIntarder system is integrated into the vehicle’s transmission and assumes 90 percent of all braking without involving the service brake, thereby increasing safety and saving material.

Additionally, the ZF-Intarder system protects the environment, with ZF estimating that with the production milestone of one million units, around 60,000 tons of brake dust has been prevented.

“The ZF-Intarder fulfills several requirements simultaneously: it increases comfort and safety, lowersmaintenance costs and improves environmental compatibility,” said Winfried Gründler, head of the Truck & Van Driveline Technology Business Unit, ZF Commercial Vehicle Technology Division said.

Key facts

The high 4,000Nm brake torque is available within one second, and can decelerate a 608kW 38-ton vehicle downhill. In addition to increased safety, the ZF-Intarder system also reduces wear to brake discs and linings, and thus maintenance costs. Driver comfort is enhanced. with the driver able to set the desired speed using cruise control, enabling the transmission control unit to take over the downhill drive and the activation of the Intarder without readjustments. The driver can regulate the brake force in increments while doing so. Due to the gentle braking of the ZF-Intarder system, the creation of brake dust is minimised. Customers of the ZF-Intarder wearfree brake system now include rail and crane manufacturers in addition to truck and bus manufacturers.

Since 1992

?? ?? One million produced: The Intarder works extremely effectively and virtually wear free, preserves the commercial vehicle service brakes and, in doing so, inhibits the development of brake dust.

?? ?? Reason to celebrate: The Intarder has been produced since 1992; the millionth unit has just come off the production line.
