Executions still on

-

Indonesia says the executions of drug smugglers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran are not open for negotiation, and has criticised Australia for revealing an offer to pay the cost of the men’s life imprisonment to the media. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop’s earlier offer of a prisoner exchange deal was rejected, and she is now awaiting a response on an offer to cover the cost of the life imprisonment of Chan and Sukumaran. Asked about the offer on Thursday, Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said the matter wasn’t open for negotiation. ‘‘This is a matter of law enforcement.’’ He said he was also keen to keep diplomatic correspondence on the subject private. Department is investigating two senior Secret Service agents accused of crashing a car into a White House security barrier. Secret Service spokesman Robert Hoback said director Joseph Clancy had asked the department’s internal investigator to look into the incident. It is the latest embarrassment for the agency tasked with protecting the president, with revelations of multiple, serious presidential protection security breaches. Last September, a man armed with a knife was able to climb a White House fence and run inside the executive mansion before being apprehended. The Washington Post reported that the agents drove a government car into a security barrier near the White House after a night of drinking.
