Could do more
I have been following the discussion about Lewis Stanton with interest. I see him in Trafalgar St every night when I drive to town.
There is much wisdom in Sean O’Connor’s ideas. And I agree that the Nelson City Council’s actions so far have turned a harmless eccentric contributing to society in his way into someone with a grudge and no income. But Valerie Towse (October 11) must be right in her ideas about returning Stanton’s horse and cart and allowing him to earn an income unhindered by council by-laws. She writes of European cities where people can hire a horsedrawn cart and do a guided tour. We can do that too. I threw up my hands in horror at what Derek Nees had to say. Such a lack of human understanding must be wrong. mayoralty, I amcompelled to reply to Mr Kempthorne who says there are no cheaper alternatives to the Lee Valley Dam. TDC and Mr Kempthorne did not wish to engage with the voters during the campaign. The only publicity late in the campaign to surface was the hydrology report or trickle down theory which councillors were promised. It was a whitewash, a disgrace and was not independent.
The ratepayers are still waiting for a list of the costs of the alternatives Mr Kempthorne is talking about. Also held back was the fifth economics report outlining the costs to the district of not proceeding with the dam and the Crown Irrigation investments offer of finance. Tasman expects more of the council.
