Must see

I seem to recall that over 20 years ago when the movie Once Were Warriors was first shown in our town, the staff from Work & Income as well as Child Youth & Family had their own private showing, as a means of inservice education. No doubt the experience gave them some insight into the realities faced by a certain section of New Zealand society.

On October 27, the movie I, Daniel Blake opens at State Cinema 6.The movie, directed by Ken Loach, sadly reflects the times we live in, especially as the gap grows wider and wider between the ‘‘haves’’ and ‘‘have nots’’ in our society.

The film brilliantly portrays the reality faced by individuals who find themselves in the unfortunate position of being a user of social services and the restrictions put on staff working in these agencies by the bureaucrats in charge.

This is a golden opportunity for agencies such as Work & Income, Housing New Zealand, NMDHB and PHO to include this movie as part of their on going staff education. I’m sure State Cinema 6 would be happy to arrange a private showing. What do you say?
