Police investigate suspicious fire

- HANNAH BARTLETT

A shed at a property in Nelson’s Victory Square area has gone up in flames in the early hours of yesterday morning in a suspicious fire.

The neighbours of the property on Murphy St, who didn’t wish to be named, said they’d woke to noises coming from next door only to see the shed was ablaze.

The woman said her husband called emergency services, while she ran next door to wake the five occupants of the house.

‘‘The flames were pretty massive,’’ the woman said.

‘‘Our fence also caught on fire but my husband put it out with a hose.’’

The shed, while still standing, was gutted and blackened inside.

The woman said she was relieved they had woken when they did and that the fire service had contained the blaze before it spread to the adjacent house, and her own home.

The landlords of the property said they had been in touch with both their insurance company and Housing New Zealand, as the damaged fence was on a Housing New Zealand property.

Nelson Senior Station Officer Symon Mitchell said two fire crews had attended the blaze and police were now investigating the suspicious blaze.

Police confirmed they had received a call just before 3:30am about a ‘‘garage fire’’ and said investigations were continuing into the potential cause.

No one was injured in the blaze.
