Cycleway boost

- JEFFREY KITT

A Government investment of $231 million will create a new cycleway along State Highway 1 north of Kaikoura.

A 60-kilometre section of the quake-hit highway is set to receive a new separated cycleway, wider shoulders and additional safety barriers under the funding.

Transport Minister Simon Bridges announced the funding yesterday and said the features would make the road better than before.

‘‘A new separated cycleway and walkway between Okiwi Bay and Mangamaunu will provide a safer and more enjoyable way for people to experience this section of the iconic coastline on foot or by bike,’’ the minister said.

‘‘These improvements will provide for great journeys and enhance visitor experiences to support increased tourism and economic growth in the region.’’

The funding, which would improve the highway between Clarence and Oaro, was in addition to the $812 million quake reinstatement package announced in this year’s Budget 2017.

The highway and Main North Rail Line remained on track to open before the end of the year, Bridges said.

The highway south of Kaikoura was reopened in June, seven months after the 7.8 magnitude quake.

It has been closed for 72 days by slips since the initial reopening after quick repairs last December.
