Maureen Pugh, National
Economic growth remains a key priority for me as an MPin West Coast-Tasman. The West Coast, in particular, has been tested by events such as a declining mining sector. This has been a stark reminder of the importance of economic diversification. As a response, the Government has supported the West Coast through initiatives such as the Regional Economic Development Plan (REDP), which is enabling further growth in tourism, technology and horticulture to secure the local economy. The $36 million investment by Government into the REDP will support new initiatives while building on what is already working. Making the most of new opportunities is vital and with the developments in technology, science as well as tourism growth, I want to play a part in championing success and advocating for our electorate.
Closing the gap: Ensuring that the success of our economy is mutually enjoyed is vital in any fair society. I amproud to stand by this Government’s record, which ensured the vast majority of families throughout West CoastTasman would keep more of what they earn as part of our $2 billion Families Package in the Budget this year. On average, families in West Coast-Tasman are $26 per week better off under National. Many will also benefit from the adjusted Accommodation Supplement by up to $80 per week. OECD data shows child material hardship has decreased under current policy, however, we should continue to aim to achieve more. Education will be crucial to ensure our children are better equipped, which will do the most to close income gaps. I am passionate about helping our schools and ensuring public services are up to speed. I have the enthusiasm and the fresh thinking to assist further progress in this area.
