Ideology waning

-

When Queen Anne died childless, George the Elector of Hanover became Britain’s new king despite being only 59th in succession to this throne.

This was because he was the first non-Catholic in the line. From the deposing of James II, it has been the law that the British monarch must be a Protestant and become the head of the Church of England.

The latest statistics show that membership of this church has halved already this century with only 15 per cent indicating adherence. For 18-24 year olds it dips to a mere three per cent. Religion has long provided the ideology for monarchs who claimed to rule by ‘‘divine right’’.

It was believed the touch of the king could cure ‘‘scrofula’’. Modern monarchists are are no less mystical. found any bait outside the fence perimeter.

The Nelson community should understand why this step is essential to establishing the Sanctuary as a haven for birds and reintroducing some of our highly threatened native species.

Trapping was conducted within the Sanctuary for seven years prior to completion of the fence. With all available volunteers only about one third of the 711 hectares could be properly covered and rats, mice, stoats and wild cats were still running about.

Bird populations did not increase, in fact several species that were reasonably numerous such as robins and tomtits have declined to be almost non-existent.

The unfortunate conclusion from many trapping programmes is they are not very effective at protecting vulnerable species. Armchair critics still advocate trapping but it is noted that none have offered to assist. The current poisoning operation is the only practical means to eliminate pests once and for all from the entire Sanctuary. another $25 million to deliver a duck pond to all (wealthy Waimea Plains land owning) New Zealanders.

They’ll deliver a $20/week tax cut to all (high income) New Zealanders because they can’t pay the power bill but alas deliver nothing to make the slum lord insulate your poorly heated hovel.

However, Nick after voting you in for 27 long years I ama little disappointed that you think we can be bought with a lousy $200 million. So to ensure the town stays true blue can we also have a luxury ship terminal, a suspension walk bridge to Rabbit Island, a lid for Trafalgar Park, a university, international airport terminal, Nelson/ Richmond/Wakefield subway system, maybe a giant luge course, a pest fence around Kahurangi National Park, the Takaka tunnel, and a super train to Christchurch?

Come on Nick, stop being such a cheapskate, we must be worth at least $500 million for you to keep your job.
