Northern and Central share title
The Northern and Central zones have shared this year’s Westrupp Cup women’s representative golf title.
Northern, representing the Greenacres and Motueka clubs, and Central, representing Nelson and Totaradale, couldn’t be separated at the Greenacres club at the weekend, both finishing the three rounds with 21 points. Eastern (Marlborough) finished third on 18 points and Western (West Coast) had 12 points.
Northern and Central both opened with 8-4 wins over Eastern and Western respectively in Saturday’s first round, while Central edged Northern 7-5 in round two and Eastern beat Western 8-4. Central ended their weekend with a 6-6 draw with Eastern in Sunday’s final round while Northern stacked up a handy 8-4 win over Western to ensure a share of the title.
Michele Reardon was the only Central player to remain unbeaten with wins over Western’s Gaye Munnerley (4/3), Northern’s Pam Chapman (3/2) and Eastern’s Tracy Bary (5/3).
Three Northern players finished with clean slates.
Annette Nistor finished with wins over Eastern’s Suzanne Lang (5/3) and Western’s Jill Waines (2/1) but halved with Central’s Jenny Norton. Margaret Robertson had a big 7/6 win over East- ern’s Ala Ward, followed by a much tighter 2/1 win over Lesley Baxter and 3/2 win over Western’s Chris Thom, while Natalee Reed beat Eastern’s Sue Campbell 6/5, Central’s Robin White 3/2 and Western’s Fiona Cooper 6/5.
An eight-player team was named following the tournament to contest the South Island interprovincial in Dunedin on October 25-29.
The team includes Tracy Bary (Rarangi), Lesley Baxter (Nelson), Pam Chapman (Motueka), Jenny Ferrier (Nelson), Lizzie Neal (Nelson), Michele Reardon (Nelson), Natalee Reed (Greenacres) and Emily Stenhouse (Marlborough). Greenacres’ Annette Nistor is the non-travelling reserve.
